Other Animals on the Farm

We enjoy a few non-profitable animals on Oh Dang Farm.  The miniature donkeys are just fun to have around, the dogs warn of anything from mice in the pens to a train going by a mile away, and the chickens provide some food for us and sometimes for predatory wildlife if they find a weakness in our fully enclosed chicken pen at night.

Our Miniature Donkeys - Taco and Bella

Our Miniature Donkeys are sweet and friendly! We enjoy Taco and Bella's slow, calming presence in the barnyard. We bought both through listings on Craigslist at different times. Miniature donkeys Taco and BellaThey seem to be made for each other and get along well with the other animals.  (Bella is the spotted one in the picture.) They don't bray much and stay close to home when we let them out of their pen to roam around during the day.  Cheap animal crackers are their favorite treat and neck wrestling is one of their favorite games to pass the time.

We hope to have a little one from them at some time.  But, even if they don't reproduce, they are still both keepers as they are so adorable, easy to handle, and just fun to be around.

Our Dogs - Spec and Athena

Athena our Great Pyreneese DogAthena is full blood Great Pyrenees.

Our dogs, Spec and Athena, are buddies.  They alert us at any sign of trouble outdoors.  (Ok, so they bark at just about anything that moves.) The barking keeps trouble away, so, they serve the purpose. Spec was a stray that wandered down our half mile drive when the kids were small (about 1990 or so) and has been a great farm dog since. Spec, she was a stray dog.

Athena is a full blood Great Pyrenees and only a few years old. We bought her to be protector of the Pygmy Goats. Though she is much larger, she always lets elderly Spec eat first.

Spec was a stray that wandered in  one day.

Our Chickens - Buff Orpingtons and Araucanas

When it comes to our mail ordered chickens, Buff Orpington and Araucana Chickens.we definitely ordered more chicks than we were prepared to raise. From chick to laying hen was hard work to care for  and provide sheltered space for each night that is secure from overnight predators. But, we enjoy the blue-green and brown eggs for a meal most every day (and our cholesterol remains within good ranges).

After a couple of years we are down to a few dozen hens and only a few extra eggs a week to give away. Soon, we will need to buy more chicks for replacement layers.

Brown Eggs, Khaki Green EggsBuff Orpington chicken eggs have brown shells. Araucana eggs have greenish-blue , greenish, and sometimes greyish colored shells.
